Why it made the cut
Project Gutenberg only has books whose copyright has fully expired. Open Library, run by the Internet Archive, goes much further — a working catalog for millions of books, including modern ones, that you can actually borrow and read through controlled digital lending, the same legal mechanism a physical library uses.
